GEORGE CORDES, farmer, Sec. 20; P. 0. Havana; was born in Hanover, Germany, in February, 1819; came to America when twenty-one years of age, and first located at Baltimore, Md., thence to Cincinnati, Ohio, and from there he removed to St. Louis, Mo. He subsequently went to New Orleans, and on his return to St. Louis, he enlisted in Col. Easton's Battalion, 1st Mo. Inf., and served eighteen months in the war with Mexico, under Gen. Price. In the summer of 1848, after his discharge from the service, he located in Havana Township, this county, where he has since followed farming. Owns 360 acres of land in this township. In 1853, he was married to Miss Ellen Woster, who was born in Hanover, Germany. They had four children:  Lizzie, wife of D. Kremer; Lucy, wife of William Reipe; Mary J. and George J. Mr. Cordes is now serving his second term of Justice of the Peace.
